Opportunity Job Fair (OJF)

Opportunity Job Fair (OJF) Web site

Description

The Dean's Office in collaboration with the Society of Women Engineers (SWE), the Stanford Society of Black Scientists and Engineers (SBSE), the American Indian Science and Engineering Society (AISES), and the Stanford Society of Chicano/Latino Engineers and Scientists (SSCLES) host an Annual Engineering, Math and Science Opportunity Job Fair on the weekend of the third week in January. The Job Fair hosts corporations from across the United States which represent all engineering disciplines and most math and science disciplines. The Fair averages over 100 companies and 1000 undergraduate and graduate students. Students from engineering, math, physics, chemistry and biology represent all students, especially underrepresented minority and women students in engineering.

Purpose

The purpose of this Job Fair is to simultaneously provide companies a large number of qualified, technical employee candidates and to provide our students employment opportunities. We believe that the job fair is a unique event for companies to meet and interact with a substantial group of outstanding Stanford engineering, math, and science students. The Job Fair creates student access to corporate internships, job placement, and career information exchange for engineering, science and math majors, especially for targeted minorities and women. The Job Fair provides opportunities for relationship building between Stanford faculty/staff/students and corporations.

Objectives

  • To identify and encourage participation of corporate sponsors
  • To create student management opportunities for SWE, SBSE, AISES and SSCLES members through planning the job fair
  • To create corporate access to a diverse pool of interns and permanent hires, especially targeted minorities (TM) and women
  • To place Stanford students in scholarship/fellowship programs, internships, co-ops, and permanent positions in industry
  • To develop ongoing relationships between Stanford faculty/staff/students and corporations
  • To expose faculty and staff to student organization members and their academic and professional needs
  • To create a funding base for the four diversity student organizations and EDP
  • To create cost-effective administration strategies
  • To evaluate based on student, corporate, and management input
  • To evaluate placement results

Administration

The Job Fair Administrative staff is based in the School of Engineering and is coordinated by the Student Affairs Office/EDP.

Structure

The Job Fair planning is conducted by the EDP director and a core committee which consists of the Assistant Dean and at least two representatives from each of AISES, SBSE, SSCLES and SWE. The core committee meets weekly to discuss the progress of assignments and to approve documents and expenditures. The agenda for the weekly meeting is set by the administrative committee which consists of the Assistant Dean, the Student Coordinator and a chair or co-chairs which are elected from the core committee members. The Student Coordinator is generally hired, but not always, from the previous year's Job Fair committee members.

Participation

Anyone interested in serving as a core committee member should discuss the position with their student organization president. Anyone who is interested in applying for the position as Student Coordinator should submit a one page statement of purpose indicating the skills and training which you possess that qualify you to assist in organizing and planning the Job Fair to Noe Lozano.

Inquiries regarding the program may be directed to Noe Lozano, Associate Dean of Student & Diversity Affairs.
