Exploring New Worlds

Stanford Engineering students do a lot of amazing things, but among the more inspiring achievements are the ones that engage the next generation of engineers. Since 1995 Stanford’s Society of Women Engineers chapter has sought to do just that through an event called “Exploring New Worlds”.

The event introduces fourth and fifth graders to science and engineering through workshops, demos and competitions. The Stanford Daily covered the May 2002 event and reported that students built balloon rocket cars, searched for iron in their cereal, learned what happens when a flower meets liquid nitrogen and learned how to make Web pages. The above photo from 2002, taken by Mark Schrumpf and published in the Daily, shows the obvious joy that a girl took in her balloon rocket car on a sunny spring Saturday.

SWE held the event again last year and President Alice Pang says plans are in the works for a new event this year. More photos and videos from 2002 are archived at SWE’s site. | View >>
