Engineering Memory of the Month
Commence celebrating
Back in the day, the School of Engineering held a schoolwide commencement (now it’s done by individual departments). Beginning in 1966, the commencement was held in Memorial Church, providing a very scenic and signature Stanford backdrop for the annual affair. The picture captures a moment from the 82nd commencement, held 35 years ago.
Of course, were there a schoolwide commencement this year, the church would be twice as packed because of how the school has grown. In 1973, the school awarded 876 degrees. These days, the school awards about 1,600.
Congratulations to all our graduates both in the past and this year.
We are interested in your nostalgic photos and the stories they tell. If you’d like to share them with the Stanford Engineering community, e-mail them to David Orenstein , manager, Communications and P.R.
