Engineering Memory of the Month

a loss against a much younger and faster team of undegrads

Having a ball in the '80s

The school year was 1983-84 and, as then mechanical engineering PhD student Cesar Luongo jokes, the ME PhD intramural soccer team was relaxing after what was most likely "a loss against a much younger and faster team of undegrads." In reality, the team was quite successful. Current ME Professor John Eaton was on the team back then, too, and recalls, "We won the intramural A league soccer championships that year."

Luongo is standing in the back, second from the left, in the photo. Luongo is now an ME associate professor at Florida State University. Eaton, who was in his second year on the Stanford ME faculty back then, is kneeling on the viewer's far right in the picture. The people in the photo, standing from left to right, are Mike Erbes, Luongo, Bernhard Hiller, Giles Brereton, Rob Barlow, and John Vogel. Kneeling are Andrew Cutler, Eric Adams, Alex Leibovich, and Eaton.

We thank Professors Luongo and Eaton for the memories. If you'd like to share your nostalgic photos and stories with the Stanford Engineering community, e-mail them to David Orenstein, manager, Communications and P.R.
