Engineering Corner

Engineering corner

Geometrically speaking it was a vertex but many years Engineering Corner was the center of he school, housing the dean’s office among other things. Here we offer three views. One is from today, another (in black and white) from the mid-1960s and the last from the mid-1950s (submitted by industrial engineering alumnus Joe Noah).

The structure itself has barely changed at all, which is no small feat on a college campus that is constantly remaking itself. The most notable differences are in the more transient of entities: living beings. The dominant tree in the ‘50s and ‘60s was on the right of the photo. Today a different tree (perhaps the one on the left in the ’60 photo) has grown to frame the scene. Certainly the people have changed. Gone are the preppy outfits of the mid-60s in favor of the less formal garb students are wearing today.

And of course, Engineering corner no longer has anything to do with engineering. The Engineering Center in the late 1970s. In two years, it will move to a new building and Terman will be torn down.

Engineering Corner, however, will still be there.

We are interesting in your nostalgic photos and the stories they tel. If you’d like to share them with the Stanford Engineering community, e-mail them to David Orenstein, Manager, Communication and P.R.
