Engineering Memory of the Month
A plane sight on campus
Stanford doesn’t usually serve as an airfield but on registration day in autumn 1971, Stanford’s flying club had a mission to recruit students to its ranks, so it parked a plane on the scene. If flying didn’t float students’ boats, they could take a look at the sailboat over in the sailing club’s space. Certainly, the students in these clubs knew a thing or two about marketing.
Although Nafiz Aydin Hizal was an aeronautics and astronautics student at the time (MS 1971), the enticement didn’t ultimately get him to join the flying club. He does recall his class getting in a plane with Professor Dan DeBra for some in situ instruction on flight dynamics.
We thank Hizal for sharing this picture with us.
We are interested in your nostalgic photos and the stories they tell. If you’d like to share them with the Stanford Engineering community, e-mail them to David Orenstein, manager, Communications and P.R.
