President John L. Hennessy will receive
the 2012 IEEE Medal of Honor, the technical society’s
highest award, given to individuals for an exceptional
contribution or an extraordinary career in the IEEE fields
of interest.

New Lightning-fast, Efficient Nanoscale Data Transmission Developed

Researchers developed a nanoscale light-based device that transmits data
at ultrafast rates while using thousands of times less energy
than current technologies.

E. coli Could Convert Sugar to Biodiesel at ‘an Extraordinary Rate’

Researchers studying how biodiesel can be generated using E. coli as
a catalyst have determined the bacteria have what it takes to
produce high volumes of the fuel. Now they need to figure out
how to tweak its cellular controls to kick it into high gear.

Stanford’s John McCarthy, Seminal Figure of Artificial Intelligence is Dead at 84

McCarthy created the term ‘artificial intelligence’ and was a towering figure in computer science at Stanford most of his professional life. In his career, he developed the programming language LISP, played computer chess via telegraph with opponents in Russia and invented computer time-sharing.
