Stanford Engineering alum James Spilker wins 2015 IEEE Edison Medal

Spilker, a consulting professor at Stanford Engineering, was honored for "contributions to the technology and implementation of civilian GPS navigation systems."

Stanford Engineering alumnus James J. Spilker has been awarded the 2015 IEEE Edison Medal. Spilker, who received his BS, MS and Ph.D. in electrical engineering from Stanford, is executive chairman of AOSense Inc. and a consulting professor of aeronautics and astronautics at Stanford.

In 2012, Spilker and his wife pledged $28 million to fund the James and Anna Marie Spilker Engineering and Applied Sciences Building, the third of four buildings in Stanford’s Science and Engineering Quad.

The IEEE Edison Medal recognizes "a career of meritorious achievement in electrical science, electrical engineering or the electrical arts."

Spilker is recognized "for contributions to the technology and implementation of civilian GPS navigation systems." He will receive the award at the 2015 IEEE Honors Ceremony.
