Speaker: Francis Chen, PhD student in Stanford EE

Bio: Francis Chen is a PhD student in Electrical Engineering at Stanford. He works with Prof. Bill Dally and Prof. John Fox on the control of multilevel inverters for large scale PV applications. He obtained his MS and BS from Northwestern University in Electrical Engineering, working with Prof. Aggelos Katsaggelos on simulatenous localization and mapping (SLAM) for micro-aerial-vehicles. He has also worked for Tesla on their battery capacity estimation algorithms

Abstract: Utility scale solar power plants nowadays mostly rely on central inverters and string inverters to connect to the grid. Recently, there are growing interests in the research of multilevel inverters which connects outputs of multiple inverters in series and directly achieves medium voltages. In this talk, we will discuss a new architecture for building three phase multilevel inverters and the control challenges behind coordinating multiple inverters to achieve multiple objectives: grid current control, PV voltage control etc.
