In June, EPRI and Stanford University Bits and Watts Initiative co-hosted a virtual workshop, that brought together utility and information technology companies to discuss the development of a data platform and enabling technologies to achieve the Digital Grid vision. This interactive panel series will provide an opportunity to take this vital conversation to the next step, examing the latest advances, emerging policies, and breakthrough research on customer DER integration every Wednesday during the summer quarter.

Bios: Ram Rajagopal is an Associate Professor of Civil and Environmental Engineering at Stanford University, where he directs the Stanford Sustainable Systems Lab (S3L), focused on large scale monitoring, data analytics and stochastic control for infrastructure networks, in particular, power networks. His current research interests in power systems are in the integration of renewables, smart distribution systems, and demand-side data analytics. Ram holds a Ph.D. in Electrical Engineering and Computer Sciences and an M.A. in Statistics, both from the University of California Berkeley, Masters in Electrical and Computer Engineering from University of Texas, Austin and Bachelors in Electrical Engineering from the Federal University of Rio de Janeiro.
Prof. Amro M. Farid is currently an Associate Professor of Engineering at the Thayer School of Engineering at Dartmouth and Adjunct Associate Professor of Computer Science at the Department of Computer Science. He leads the Laboratory for Intelligent Integrated Networks of Engineering Systems (LIINES). The laboratory maintains an active research program in Smart Power Grids, Energy-Water Nexus, Electrified Transportation, Industrial Energy Management and Interdependent Smart City Infrastructures. He received his Sc. B. in 2000 and his Sc. M. 2002 from the MIT Mechanical Engineering Department. He went onto complete his Ph.D. degree at the Institute for Manufacturing within the University of Cambridge (UK) Engineering Department in 2007. He has varied industrial experiences from the automotive, semiconductor, defense, chemical, and manufacturing sectors. He has made active contributions to the MIT-Masdar Institute Collaborative Initiative1, the MIT Future of the Electricity Grid Study, and the IEEE Vision for Smart Grid Controls. He currently serves as Chair of the Council of Engineering Systems Universities (CESUN), Chair of IEEE Smart Cities Technical Activities Committee, and Co-Chair of the IEEE Systems, Man & Cybernetics (SMC) Technical Committee on Intelligent Industrial Systems. He is a senior member of the IEEE and a member of the ASME and INCOSE.
Dr. Sara Mullen-Trento is a Project Manager/Technical Lead at the Electric Power Research Institute (EPRI). She joined EPRI in September of 2009, and currently manages projects focused on assessment of efficient technologies for cost-effectiveness and customer value and the resulting potential for energy and emissions impacts. In addition, she works with the Electric Transportation group with a focus on energy transfer from plug-in electric vehicles back to the power grid. The work draws on her background in power systems operations and controls. Dr. Mullen-Trento received the Bachelor of Computer Engineering degree, and Master’s and doctoral degrees in Electrical Engineering from the University of Minnesota, Twin Cities in 2003, 2006, and 2009, respectively.
