1. When can I apply for SSEA?
The program application will open May 1st, 2024.
2. Are international students eligible to participate?
International students have been an important part of our programs for years, but given the current nature of international protocols on travel this year, there may be additional barriers that could prevent participation. We are happy to consult with international students about the program requirements, commitment, and schedule to see if it will work for you. Please feel free to reach out directly to sseaprogram@stanford.edu.
3. What are my chances of being selected?
This year we are able to select ~40 participants. Each year we receive many more applications than we are able to accommodate. However, there are many resources and activities open and available to all undergraduates at Stanford and in the School of Engineering.
4. Where is SSEA held?
SSEA is held on Stanford campus, students participating in the program are housed in a residence hall on campus and take all of their classes in Stanford classrooms. Students are taken off campus occasionally for weekend excursions.
5. How much does SSEA cost?
Nothing! All costs to attend and participate in the summer are fully covered.
6. What are the dates of the 2024 Summer Program?
The summer 2024 program will run from Saturday, August 3rd to Friday, August 30th, 2024. Scholars are expected to move in on Saturday, August 3rd by 5pm and move out on Friday, August 30th by 11am.
7. What is the time commitment during this program?
Students should expect to dedicate themselves full-time to the residential program during the month of August.
8. I am unable to commit to the entire 4 weeks of SSEA, can I attend only part of it?
No. Building strong relationships within the SSEA community is one of the most important parts of the program, and you will not be able to do this if you do not participate fully. Therefore, we are only accepting applications from students who are able to commit to participating in the entire 4-week experience.
9. What can I expect to learn from the SSEA curriculum?
Formally, you will take a computer science class and a math course that aims to reshape your mathematical mindset for success at Stanford. SSEA aims to jumpstart the path towards engineering by building community and introducing you to the resources, key skills, and faculty that will help you flourish at Stanford.
10. What happens after the summer program?
SSEA Scholars participating in the summer program will enroll in a one-unit seminar course during the Autumn quarter of their first year. This weekly seminar continues the themes of leadership, community, and professional development from the summer while also preparing you to take advantage of your time at Stanford. SSEA hosts academic and social events throughout the academic year.
11. Can I credit any of the work I do at SSEA towards my degree at Stanford?
SSEA Scholars will receive 2 units of credit in their Autumn study list for the participation and completion of SSEA. SSEA scholars will also earn 1 additional unit for the participation and completion of the SSEA seminar. The total 3 units of credit cannot be applied towards any prerequisites or WAYS requirements.
12. Can I apply to SSEA, Leland Scholars Program LSP, and SOAR?
Yes, in fact, you can apply to all of these programs using the same application! Please note that if you are selected, you will only receive an offer to participate in one program. Therefore, apply only to the programs you would be content with attending. The link to the application will be posted on all three websites.
